Candie Halberg shared her remembrances of her Grandma Dale (Evans) and Grandpa Roy (Rogers) with us.  We were dazzled by hearing about their fame and how a young child finds out her every day grandparents are somehow different than other grandparents.  Candie’s story was a touching reminiscence of two seemingly ordinary people who accomplished great things, but remained decent, family-oriented people who were kind to others and appreciative of their fans. 

 

Candie recounted that her grandparents were parents to a child with Down Syndrome and how in those days the studios and others felt they should abandon their daughter to an institution.  Perhaps well ahead of their times, Roy and Dale kept their child at home and loved her like their other children until the day she died a premature death due to a heart defect.

 

We all enjoyed hearing this inside story about Dale and Roy, who we all felt we knew, from someone who actually did and carries loving memories of her grandparents.   This program proved once again that some of our best programs are those provided by our members.  Thank you Candie.
