Candie's grandparents were Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, and their love for children was evident to their many fans...especially the youngest. Roy, Dale, and Trigger visited countless children's hospital wards to cheer and raise spirits of the boys and girls suffering with illness or injury. Roy and Dale's own family was a large one, with some of their children by birth, and some by adoption. In 1952, they welcomed one of their own, Robin Elizabeth Rogers, who was soon diagnosed with Down's Syndrome. Candie shares their loving response (rare in celebrity society in that era), and how, as a substitute teacher, she carries that same love and compassion for the children with special needs in our Litchfield and Agua Fria elementary, middle, and high schools.
Todd Hornback of the White Tanks Mountain Conservancy joined us on October 4 and shared the story of the White Tanks Mountain Conservancy (WTMC). It is believed the Hohokam Indians inhabited the White Tanks from 500 - 1,100 AD, as they did other parts of the Salt River Valley, but then suddenly abandoned the area around 1,000 AD for reasons that are uncertain. There is evidence of some 75 ancient villages within the WT Regional Park. The White Tanks mountains are directly in the path of growth in the Metro Phoenix area with development already occurring east of the range and several large developments planned to the West as well. According to Mr. Hornback, one of the goals of the WTMC includes encouraging intelligent development which allows maintenance of existing migratory paths for wildlife and other considerations. Through this intelligent and informed development, it is hoped that the White Tanks will retain their current diverse wildlife and avoid the fate of areas like Camelback Mountain and South Mountain where migratory paths were blocked and much of the wildlife has disappeared.
