It Happened at Rotary on September 27
President-elect Cheryl presided at this week's meeting. The club said the pledge of allegiance, am inspirational moment was led by Todd Halberg and the 4-way test was led by Larry Cervarich,
This week we heard from a number of members on how they decided to join Rotary and why they continue to be members.
Cheryl Petersen, President-elect:
I first started coming a few years back with my husband. For a long time I sat in the back quietly. I was comfortable there, taking it all in, and trying to figure out what my next purpose was in regard to service. Where did I fit? Where did I belong? Where could I be of help? My whole life was about giving back, but this Rotary thing was new. It was Dick Crichton and Don Mellon who “pushed” me to the front of the room. “We want to hear from you, you add so much value here! Well, never in my wildest imagination would I be in the front of the room, addressing you all, as the next President Elect. I am honored!
Kevin Barko, Member of Board of Directors (Membership Chair):
My invite to Rotary was easy, my good friend Artie, God rest his soul, best beer making buddy around. We’d catch up on the days events and any gossip there was to share. He brought me to Rotary. Never imagined how blessed my wife and I would be with Heritage Street Cooks. Last week we donated and fed 255 Cancer Survivors. It’s time and our honor to give back and Rotary is allowing me that.
Dave Johnson, Chair of our Habitat for Humanity Project:
It’s simple for me. 32 years ago I was a member of a Rotary club in northern California. I went to meetings on and off for 10 years. In my time there, I cannot recall an opportunity to serve nor the fact of a single donation. Sadly, a bust. I had breakfast with Don Mellon one day, and he spoke about Service Above Self. I was all in and never looked back. What an incredible community of people, Rotarians.
Marcus Greene, Newest Rotary member:
It’s simple for me. Home is where your family is, not necessarily the physical house. Rotary is about people and service, not necessarily the club itself, but what we in the club do for others. Good people doing good things. Cool people doing cool things.
Holly Nott, Member of Board of Directors and Public Image Chair:
When you and your tribe are truly building goodwill and better friendships, then most likely you lead your life truthfully, and fair for the benefit others. After 30 yrs. of service in education, I joined my mom, Pat Redfield, and we were the real estate dynamic duo. With schedule changes came the opportunity to check out Rotary. “7 am Meetings”, she said. My reply, “what”?! We had a couple years together in Rotary, but experienced the devastating loss of Pat’s life in 2021. Pat lit up the room. We all miss her dearly. Thank you for being my ROCK. I stand here today and look at you all, my Rotary Family, and want to say thank you. The love and encouragement you showed me through those difficult days of grieving the loss of my mom will not be forgotten. Special thanks to Dave Faragher, Don Mellon, Dick Crichton, and Dave Johnson, always a card, kind word or squeeze on the shoulder. You all are a group with incredible passion, and crazy energy early in the am, how could you not be my peeps?
Thank you to all who shared at today's meeting.
