Memorial Day Holiday

Monday, May 27 is Memorial Day.  Originally established in 1868 to commemorate war dead from the Civil War, the holiday was originally known as Decoration Day and since 1971 has been observed on the fourth Monday of May.  According to www.military.com here are some facts about Memorial Day.

  • The holiday honors those who lost their lives while in service to the United States during peace and war.
  • Memorial Day is not a celebration, but a solemn day to reflect those lost their lives while serving
  • To observe Memorial Day Americans spend the day attending Memorial Day events or visiting cemeteries and otherwise honoring  we have lost
  • Because Memorial Day is a somber day to honor those who died in service, saying Happy Memorial Day is considered bad taste
  • By contrast, Veterans Day is the day we honor the service of all Americans who served in the military
  • The red poppy is traditionally worn on Memorial Day, a tradition started during World War I and inspired by the poem "in Flanders Fields" written in 1915
  • Flags should be flown at half-staff until noon, after which they should be fully hoisted

Last Week at Rotary

Our speaker last week was Laurel Arndt of the White Tanks Mountains Conservancy.  The White Tanks Mountain Conservancy is an advocate for wildlife conservation amidst rapid urban development. Their innovative approach to wildlife connectivity, which involves the strategic placement of new developments alongside natural landscapes, ensures that animals like mule deer, mountain lions, and javelinas can continue to thrive in their natural habitats. This not only preserves the biodiversity of the region but also enhances the quality of life for residents by providing beautiful, natural spaces for recreation and relaxation. The Conservancy's collaborative efforts with developers and city planners aim to create a sustainable balance between growth and nature conservation. Their work is a testament to the power of community involvement and the positive impact it can have on preserving our natural world for future generations.
