PDG David Simmer Speaks to Rotary

PDG Simmer and President Holly

David Simmer, a member of the Rotary Club of Sedona and past district governor of Rotary District 5495 was our speaker last week. His topic was the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.  He explained his personal journey from a “let’s stick to local” projects to how he has come to embrace the Rotary Foundation.  Along the way he shared the history of the Foundation, one of the most respected charities in the world with a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator.

The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International has an illustrious history that began in 1917 with the vision of Arch Klumph, then-President of Rotary International. Klumph proposed the establishment of an endowment fund dedicated to "doing good in the world." The initial sum of $26.50, contributed in 1918, marked the humble beginning of what would become a global humanitarian powerhouse.

Throughout the decades, the Foundation expanded its reach and impact. In 1928, it was officially named "The Rotary Foundation" and began funding educational initiatives and international scholarships. The Foundation's mission evolved to encompass not only education but also peace promotion, health improvement, and disaster relief.

One of the most significant milestones in the Foundation's history was the launch of the PolioPlus program in 1985. This ambitious initiative aimed to eradicate polio worldwide, and it has made monumental strides toward that goal, reducing polio cases by 99%. The Rotary Foundation collaborates with governments, non-profits, and other organizations to maximize its impact.

Today, the Rotary Foundation continues to drive humanitarian efforts, including providing clean water, supporting maternal and child health, and promoting peace through conflict resolution programs. Its legacy of service and commitment to making the world a better place remains steadfast and inspiring.

The Rotary Club of Verrado and Rotary International have set a goal for our club to be an Every Rotarian Every Year club.  In order to meet that milestone, each individual member is asked to donate a minimum of $25 per year to the Foundation with average per member giving of $100 per member.  If you are interested in making a one time or recurring donation to the Foundation, Click HERE.
