Sandy Fabritz, Director of Water Policy for Phoenix-based Freeport McMoRan, spoke to the Rotary Club of Verrado on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. She outlined Freeport’s global and Arizona operations, noting that much U.S. copper mining is concentrated in the Colorado River basin. Ms. Fabritz emphasized the growing global demand for copper and the lengthy U.S. permitting process, which can take nearly 30 years for new or expanded mines. She also described the essential role of water in copper production and Freeport’s extensive efforts to recycle water and develop its own water sources.
Freeport McMoRan is the largest copper producer in the United States, supplies 70% of the nation’s refined copper, and operates the Morenci Mine in southeastern Arizona, which produces about 30% of U.S. copper ore.
