Changes and a look ahead: Educating our gradeschoolers in 2024
Changes and a look ahead: Educating our gradeschoolers in 2024

Dr. Chad Lanese's appointment as the next superintendent of the Buckeye Elementary School District was officially confirmed during the December 4, 2023 governing board meeting. While his official term commences on January 1 in this new capacity, Dr. Lanese has diligently served as the district's acting superintendent since August 2023. In the five years prior, Dr. Lanese served BESD in several different roles, including as the executive director of student services and assistant superintendent.

In the realm of educational philosophy, Dr. Lanese is unwaveringly dedicated to fostering open and transparent communication. This commitment is a key and necessary component of his overarching focus:  the students, staff and community of Buckeye. With a wealth of varied experience in public education spanning 25 years, Dr. Lanese has contributed to both the Glendale Elementary School District and the Paradise Valley Unified School District. His roles have included teacher, assistant principal, elementary principal and high school principal, culminating with his arrival at BESD in 2019.

Dr. Lanese holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona, earned a master's degree in educational leadership from Arizona State University and completed his doctoral degree at Northern Arizona University.

Dr. Lanese is honored to assume the role of superintendent for the Buckeye Elementary School District, and is committed to promoting open communication, fostering teamwork, and cultivating a positive environment as the district collectively strives for excellence.

Last Week

Did you know that Vernon Walker was a pilot and flight instructor?  Did you know that Trish Hosking and Mary Lou Cannelos lived through the 1964 Alaska Earthquake (9.0 on the Richter scale). Or that David Faragher served in Operation Desert Storm?  If you were at Rotary, you might also have learned that Margie Cossette is from New England and her son is a pilot at Luke, who is married to Todd's daughter.  Speaking of Todd, did you know that Todd's mom and dad responded to a call from Douglas MacArthur for missionaries to come to Japan to help with the war recovery and that Todd lived in Japan for five years and is still fluent in Japanese.  Other tidbits: George Cannelos met Marly Lou in the checkout line at Costco.  Ed Williams served on the California Board of Parole.  In 2,000 cases he reviewed, he saw perhaps 7 cases where he would have recommended parole.  Verlynne Meck was the Arizona State High School Tennis Champion and later served as Woman's Tennis Coach at Grand Canyon College.  Mayor Meck was also a pilot and recounted a store where he had to return to an unlighted field in a windstorm in Salome.  To his knowledge no one else has ever made a successful night landing in Salome.  Lloyd Trilling went to high school with two members of the band Aerosmith.  Don Ester said he is not against marriage, but he still needs some time to think about if its right for him.  Cheryl was introduced to now husband Greg by a co-worker - who just happened to be looking for a suitable wife for her son.  The rest is history.  Greg should say thanks to his mom.   I know I missed a few, and if you are amongst them, please accept my apologies - - but without Trish's help the list would have been much shorter, so I am grateful to her for a good memory.   Thank you to Todd Halberg for coming up with a fun activity in lieu of a speaker at the last minute!
