Last Week at Rotary!

Mr. Jude Clark, a guest of George Cannelos, agreed to step in as our speaker for the day after a last minute conflict came up for our scheduled speaker. Mr. Clark spoke about the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, explained how the plant operates and generates power and shared some interesting stories about his years working at the plant. An excellent power point presentation was shared with the club and sent to members. The club is very grateful to Mr. Clark for stepping up for us last week and for an excellent and engaging presentation. We were also pleased to hear Jude may submit an application to join us.

Some interesting facts:

Palo Verde is the largest nuclear power plan in the world not located on a body of water
Palo Verde generates about 4.5 megawatts of power, enough to power 4.5 million homes
Palo Verde is the largest producing power plant of any kind in the United States
One pellet of uranium fuels the size of a gummy bear generates as much power as 1 ton of coal or 3 barrels of oil
The spent fuel from Palo Verde over a sixty-year period would fit in an area approximately the size of a football field
All of the spent fuel produced from commercial reactors since 1950 would fit an area the size of a football field and about 30 feet high

Rotary District 5495 Celebration and Conference

Come join several of your club members at the annual Rotary District 5495 Celebration and Conference on May 5 and 6, 2023. The conference schedule:

May 5: 11:30 am Conference Opens

May 5: 5:30 pm Hospitality Suites are open

May 6: Conference and Service Project. 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Conference concludes at 8:00 pm

May 7: Fundraiser for The Rotary Vocational Fund at Arizona Diamondbacks Game

The conference will be held at The Renaissance Hotel Phoenix, 101 North First Street, Phoenix (Corner First Street and Adams in downtown Phoenix)

Rotary has arranged a room block with excellent rates and special onsite parking for people attending the conference.

Announcements

NOW is the time to sign up for the Verrado Road Clean Up and breakfast afterwards. The clean up is on Saturday, April 29, 2023, and begins at 7:30 am at the Palo Verde Education Center. For more information and to RSVP, please click HERE.
