Day & Zimmermann, at the forefront of Nuclear Power and Defense
Day & Zimmermann, at the forefront of Nuclear Power and Defense

It’s a long way from journeyman painter to Senior Vice President, but as Mr. Chesnut has said, he’s a prime example of how early training in technical disciplines matters and how blue-collar jobs can lead to long, fulfilling careers. When Alabama Power started construction of Farley Nuclear Plant, his Dad and uncles started working there as painters and carpenters. Not long after at age 18, he started at Farley as a journeyman painter in the local union hall.”  He remembers working at Farley and feeling that this huge construction project to provide nuclear power was part of something great. He has never lost that feeling about nuclear energy’s significance.   After Farley, James acquired additional training, furthered his education, and gained experience at nuclear generating stations in maintenance, construction, engineering, and outage management. Eventually, he found his way to Arizona and the nation’s largest nuclear facility, Palo Verde.  James’ passion fits so well with our own club as he stated before the Nebraska Legislature:  “My nuclear career has carried me across the country. No matter where I travel for my work, my favorite part of the job is helping young people find their way into great careers in the nuclear field. I work with community colleges helping to design or enhance nuclear power training programs and curriculum. I'm currently active in Arizona at West-MEC, a career training facility for local high-school students.  I have been able to use my experience in the nuclear industry to mentor many young people — at my job, in my community, in my family… and even my sons’ friends. In addition to my own kids, I raised three boys who came from broken homes and introduced them to careers in nuclear maintenance, which was a game changer.”

Rotary Receives a Report about Habitat for Humanity

Our own David Johnson was in town this week and led off a program about an opportunity for Habitat to come to Buckeye.  He introduced Andrea and Josh from Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona.  Andrea and Josh explained that Habitat has a piece of property near downtown Buckeye and are working to make building a home on that site a reality.  They mentioned that Habitat selects the buyers for each home who must meet strict qualifications, as well as commit to providing no less than 400 volunteers hours with Habitat.  They stressed that Habitat sells homes to buyers and helps them to earn a down payment with sweat equity and no interest mortgages.  All repayments go to build more homes.  The average longevity of a Habitat buyer is over 15 years. In order to sponsor a home a sponsor must commit to provide a minimum number of volunteer hours and assume responsibility to raise a total of $120,000.  Houses typically take 3 months to complete, once all the rules and regulations are satisfied.

Mrs Mayor's book Sells at Auction for Record Price

Our own Mrs Verlyne Meck donated one of her books to be auctioned off at the meeting this week.  The bidding was fast, furious and competitive, with David Johnson the winning bidder at $150.  Thank you David and Verlyne for your generosity in supporting our club.

Sorry you Missed the Feed My Starving Children Community Service Project?

In case you weren't already sad for missing out on the fun on September 30, here is a picture of our crew having a great time.  Mike Nott provided a report noting we packed over 38,000 meals during our packing session.  Your club also was a Silver Sponsor of the event, donating a total of $1,000.  It was a great time and a worthwhile effort.  Thanks to all who turned out.
