Rotary New Years Eve Celebration!Hosted by Rhonda Boyles at her beautiful home in Victory, Rotarians and friends enjoyed ringing in the New Year (well actually we said hello based on midnight in Nova Scotia) on a beautiful December 31 evening. Steve Ciucci set up his telescope for stargazing and we were treated to a clear view of Jupiter and two of its moons. We were also treated to a space lesson from George Cannelos, using his laser pointer to show us key celestial features including planets, stars and constellations (I sure wish they had had a laser pointer when I was trying to pass "stars" at Camp Watchung on the way to my First Class rank in Boy Scouts!). George also gave us a short presentation on space, walrus oosiks (look it up) and how the meaning of a poem could change depending on whether you read it forward or backward. He also showed us pictures of NASA's Europa Clipper which will make several passes by Jupiter's moon Europa which will provide complete mapping of the moon, hoping to aid scientists in the study of the moon's ice cap and the oceans beneath it. Fascinating stuff. For more information on the Europa Clipper project click HERE. Here are some photos from the party. A big thank you to Rhonda for her home and great food and drink, and to Steve and George for the stargazing and other activities. | George and Mary Lu festive and ready to party |
