ROTARY FAQ Corner…

Rotary's Biggest Project - Polio

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.

As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.

Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.

Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

In 1993, the late Steve Benson, nationally syndicated political cartoonist, drew this cartoon for our Rotary District.

Last Week and Club News

Welcome Back, Friends!

As summer comes to a close, it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces at Rotary last week. We hope you all had a fantastic summer!

Our guest speaker, Terry Lowe, the Director of Water Resources for the City of Buckeye, provided an insightful overview of the various entities responsible for water and wastewater services in our city. He discussed the regulatory and legal challenges related to water supply and emphasized that both the state and city are always planning with a 100-year horizon in mind.

Terry also highlighted the impact of recent low snowpack years on the river's ability to meet water demands. He mentioned that most states in the Colorado River compact are actively working towards a solution. When asked about the desirability of continued growth, Terry suggested that this is a matter for elected policymakers to decide.

John David “JD” Hayworth Jr. is an accomplished American television host and former politician, recognized for his years of service in broadcast journalism and public office. Born on July 12, 1958, in High Point, North Carolina, Hayworth built a multifaceted career defined by a dedication to public communication and civic leadership.

A graduate of North Carolina State University, Hayworth earned his bachelor's degree in speech communications and political science in 1980 and served as student body president during his senior year. His early career was rooted in sports broadcasting, with anchor positions at WPTF-TV in Raleigh/Durham, WFBC-TV (now WYFF-TV) in Greenville, South Carolina, and WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1987, he relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where he became the sports anchor for KTSP-TV (later KSAZ-TV), the CBS affiliate, a role he held until 1994. Prior to his political career Hayworth was a member of the Phoenix Rotary Club 100.

Hayworth entered the political arena in 1994, winning election to the United States House of Representatives for Arizona's 6th Congressional District and became part of the first Republican House Majority in 40 years. He represented the district from 1995 to 2007, becoming known for his energetic presence and commitment to his constituents.

Following his congressional service, Hayworth returned to broadcasting, bringing his experience to the airwaves as a talk radio host on KFYI in Phoenix. He gained national visibility as the host of "Newsmax Prime," a news and talk show airing weeknights on Newsmax TV, where his engaging style and political insight reached viewers across the country.

A family man, Hayworth has been married to his wife Mary since 1989, and together they have three children. He also carries a legacy of athleticism and resilience from his grandfather, Ray Hayworth, who played as a Major League Baseball catcher from 1926 to 1945.

With his broad experience in media and government, John David Hayworth Jr. brings a wealth of knowledge and perspective to his audiences, making him a compelling and authoritative speaker on American politics, media, and leadership.
