Last Week at Rotary

Mr. Hans Driessnach, CEO of Abrazo West Hospital, presented an insightful program to the Rotary Club of Verrado on September 17, 2024. Here are the key points:
Interventional Neurology at Abrazo West
  • New Practice: Established for stroke intervention and removing clots from large vessels.
  • Proximity Advantage: Previously, the closest intervention was at St. Joe’s, requiring 60-90 minutes of travel, which could significantly impact patient outcomes.
  • Activity: 74 large vessel interventions were performed last month.
  • Trauma Center: Abrazo West is a Level One Trauma Center.
Upcoming Services and Focus
  • Cranial Surgery
  • Digestive Health
  • Robotic Surgery
  • Biliary Surgeons
Technological Advances
  • AI in Radiology: Pre-scan diagnostic scans for indications of emergent situations.
  • Therabel: A headband that continuously monitors EEG.
Recent Investments
  • $30 Million Spent: On new equipment and services, including:
    • Spine navigator
    • Intraoperative CT
    • Mako robot for joint replacement
    • Da Vinci Robots
Abrazo Buckeye
  • Complementary Facility: Serving core needs like cardiology, vascular surgery, and general surgery.
  • New Medical Office Building: 50,000 sq ft, aimed at building a medical community. Once doctors are in place a hospital campus will be built around the doctor’s offices to serve patient needs.
Future Vision
  • New Healthcare Delivery Model: Developing innovative approaches to healthcare.
  • Physician shortage: The country is forecast to be short of physicians for the next 20 years.  Mr. Driessnach said Abrazo and other health systems are working to address this shortage by trying the make doctors more efficient by offloading administrative tasks, but that third party payers such as insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid often are obstacles to reducing “friction” in the practice of medicine.
Abrazo has been serving the Buckeye Community for over 20 years and it appears they are well positioned to serve our community as we continue to grow.  Thank you once again to Mayor Meck for bringing us another excellent program.
